EA Ends Black Panther, Closes Cliffhanger

Electronic Arts (EA) has canceled its upcoming Black Panther game and shut down Cliffhanger Games, the studio developing it. Cliffhanger Games was established in 2023 specifically to work on the Black Panther title.

Reasons for Cancellation

EA’s decision to cancel the game and close the studio is part of a broader restructuring effort. Laura Miele, EA’s boss, stated in a memo that the company aims to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.” This suggests a shift in priorities, with EA focusing on projects and franchises that promise higher returns.

Cliffhanger Games

Cliffhanger Games was led by Kevin Stephens, who previously oversaw the production of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War at Monolith Productions. The team also included members who had worked on major titles like Halo, God of War, and Call of Duty. When the studio and the game were announced in 2023, EA mentioned that the game was in early development and aimed to create a “definitive and authentic Black Panther experience.”

EA and Marvel Partnership

EA has a multi-game deal with Marvel. Currently, the only confirmed project from this partnership is a new Iron Man game being developed by Motive Studio. The cancellation of the Black Panther game raises questions about the future of other potential Marvel titles under EA’s banner.
