Lost in Cult, known for its high-quality publications and collectibles celebrating gaming culture, has announced the launch of its new physical games publishing label. This venture emphasizes prestige, preservation, and curation, marking a significant entry into the physical games market. The label aims to redefine physical game collecting, ensuring both collectors and casual gamers can enjoy influential titles for years.

Launch Titles

Lost in Cult’s publishing label is starting with three titles for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch:

  • Thank Goodness You’re Here! A BAFTA-nominated comedy adventure game.
  • Immortality: A critically acclaimed interactive film and BAFTA winner for Best Narrative.
  • The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow: A folk horror adventure game nominated for Game of the Year by PC Gamer.

These titles will be available in mass retail editions and premium, limited-run collector’s editions known as “EDITIONS.”

Commitment to Preservation

A key aspect of Lost in Cult’s mission is game preservation. All games will be complete on disc or cartridge, eliminating the need for download codes or internet connections to play. This ensures the games remain accessible and playable in the future, regardless of online services.

To further this commitment, Lost in Cult has partnered with DoesItPlay?, a preservation group that tests physical releases and hardware for offline functionality. DoesItPlay? ensures each title meets stringent offline play standards, verifying that the core content is playable without an internet connection and that the game is fully completable.

Editions

The limited “EDITIONS” are designed with collectors in mind, offering a range of exclusive items:

  • Exclusively commissioned outer slipcase artwork
  • Variant retail covers
  • A poster and collector’s checklist
  • A booklet edited by Lost in Cult’s editorial director, Chris Schilling, featuring developer interviews and analytical essays.

These editions are limited to between 1,000 and 5,000 units per title and are sold exclusively on Lost in Cult’s website.

Retail Distribution

Mass retail editions of the games will be available online and in stores through a distribution partnership with PM Studio, known for handling physical releases for titles like Black Myth: Wukong. This ensures broad accessibility for gamers who prefer physical copies.

Industry Reactions

The announcement has garnered positive reactions from developers and industry figures. Sam Barlow, the developer of Immortality, praised Lost in Cult’s attention to detail and commitment to quality, emphasizing that their releases feel like genuine companion pieces to the games. Shaun Aitcheson of Cloak and Dagger Games, the studio behind The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow, highlighted the importance of preserving indie games in an era increasingly dominated by digital-only releases.

Ryan Brown, Head of Publishing at Lost In Cult, stated that the company is setting a new standard for physical games, aiming to preserve not just the game but also the story and artistry behind its creation.

Future Plans

Lost in Cult plans to announce more titles in the coming months, continuing its mission to curate and preserve high-quality games in physical formats.
